"Is It So Wrong (a day off)"
by Wes Fessler
Complexity in life is something I don't understand.
You work your fingers to the bone just for a piece of land.
How difficult the moder world has made it just to live,
as money falls through fingertips like water through a sieve.
A great amount of time is spend conforming to the mold,
and ending up a product that is labeled and controlled.
The energy exerted, yields so little in reward.
When costs exceed the wages, what can anyone afford?
Surviving at the minimum until the day you die,
caught up in the complexity, no time to wonder why.
What made the world a puzzle where the pieces all must fit,
or face the consequences and be thrown into a pit?
Is it so wrong to wish that I could live for those I love?
To simply bring them joy, away from all the push and shove?
Why do I face such scorn when I stay home from work or school
to help my stranded mother when her car runs out of fuel?
And why is it so terrible to sit at home to write
my lovely wife a letter that may brighten up her night?
Or what about the children? They are growing up so fast.
Am I to just ignore them until childhood has passed?
I'm sorry if my absence from work made your anger burst,
but you will have to wait your turn, I put my family first.
