Parenthood
"Easy To Say"
by Wes Fessler
Time has run out.
I did not reach the goal.
A new father to be.
How can I fit the role?
I don't have a good job,
and she has to work too.
In a matter of months
the whole plan fell right through.
It was easy to say
just a short time ago,
"You'll stay home with the child,
and I'll pay all we owe."
So we left it at that
and went on just the same,
but now time has run out,
and there's no one to blame.
There is no pot of gold
waiting for me to find.
There is no place to hide
in the back of my mind.
There is only a treasure
of much greater worth
that is soon to arrive
in miraculous birth.
Though it never seemed real,
as it does to us now,
we will do all we can,
and we'll make it somehow.
We are sure to lose sleep
and perhaps even hair!
But this gift from above
is beyond all compare.
