"Into the Air"
by Wes Fessler
Long ago I climbed a ladder to a roof of twenty feet,
thinking nothing of the matter, or the fate that I would meet.
There was work that must be done, and as the light one, I should go.
But as I worked on the roof, I faced a danger down below.
I was left there all alone while I was working on the top.
There was no one there to steady me, or help me should I drop.
Still I thought I'd be just fine, I'd done it many times before.
And I never thought that this time I'd come crashing to the floor.
But the feet of that big ladder weren't as firm as they should be,
and before I knew it that ladder slipped out from under me.
In horror I fell down onto the concrete like the rain.
My arm shattered into pieces, and I shuddered from the pain.
I have never been the same since then. I've become scared of height.
Now each time I see a ladder, it is not a pretty sight.
But when I fixed our roof at home, I'm so glad you were there.
You held the ladder firmly, and you took the time to care.
Still I was scared to come back down, I had a second thought.
A fear of height I'd never known froze me right on the spot.
I walked around a little bit and knowing you were there,
I overcame my fear, and placed my feet into the air.
I reached the ground safely this time, because I was with you.
Your love helps me do accomplish what I'm not sure I can do.
