Family Fun Shop Recipes : Dinner Main Course
"Chicken Fried Steak"

Chicken fried steak is a master of disguise. Is it a chicken or a steak? This is the question that has been posed by patrons of restaurants for years. I'm telling you now that it is a steak that looks like a chicken. The main thing is that it is delicious!

With our Chicken Fried Steak recipe, you and your family can have this discussion at the table while enjoying this wonderful dinner. Our Chicken Fried Steak recipe wraps all of that fabulous steak flavor inside a breaded coat. A savory chicken based gravy is then poured over the top to complete the disguise. Now you know what it is, but let your family debate the matter a bit before you tell them.

Serves 5

Chicken Fried Steak Recipe

Chicken Ingredients

2 lbs Beef Round Steak
2 Cups All Purpose Flour
3 Eggs
1 Tbsp Water
1/4 tsp Salt
1/4 tsp Pepper

1 Cup Bread Crumbs
1 Cup Corn Flake Crumbs

Directions for Orange Chicken

Prepare 3 medium sized bowls with the following according to the colors of the ingredients above:

Bowl 1: Place the ingredients in RED above into a medium sized bowl (this will be used as the first bowl for dipping the steaks before frying). All purpose flour

Bowl 2: Place the Ingredients in BLUE above in a second medium sized bowl. This will be the second dipping bowl for the steaks. Eggs, water, salt, and pepper.

Bowl 3: Place the ingredients in GREEN above into a third medium sized bowl.

Dip steaks in flour bowl, egg mixture, then crumb bowl.

Pour enough vegetable oil in a large skillet to cover the steaks.

Fry steaks on medium heat for at least 3 1/2 minutes, turning once during frying.

*It is a good idea to check at least one of the steaks after frying to check the doneness. This will vary depending on the thickness of the steak and more or less frying time may be required for appropriate doneness.

Gravy Ingredients

2 Cups Chicken Broth
1/2 Cup Heavy Cream
2 Tbsp Flour
2 Tbsp Butter
1 Tbsp Corn Starch
1 Tbsp Water

1/4 tsp Salt
1/4 tsp Pepper
1/4 tsp Onion Powder
1/4 tsp Garlic Powder

Directions for Chicken

Mix 1 Tbsp Corn Starch and 1 Tbsp COLD water in a small bowl and set aside. This will be added to boiling gravy mixture.

Combine all remaining ingredients in a saucepan. Be sure to mix flour in completely while mixture is cool.

Stir continuously and heat on medium-high (3/4) heat to a gentle boil.

Add in the corn starch and water mixture from the bowl slowly and a little at a time while stirring. Continue boiling and stirring until mixture thickens.

When mixture thickens remove from heat immediately.

Preparation and Serving Directions

Preparation
It is best to prepare the gravy first so it is ready to pour over the steaks immediately when they are done frying.

Serving
This meal is great to serve with mashed potatoes. When serving this way place a Chicken Fried Steak on a plate with a large serving of mashed potatoes and smother both with gravy.
