Road-Trip Barbeque

Our family loves to barbeque. We also love to get out and see the world around us. One day we decided to take a trip up to Bear Lake. Rather than blowing our money on greasy fast-food, we thought it would be great if we could barbeque and enjoy a “home-style” meal instead.

We figured realized that barbeques are often available at parks and campgrounds, but it was impossible to predict the suitability or cleanliness of such a permanent barbeque even if one was available. Many times these permanent barbeques have grates that are so wide that your food falls through them into the abyss of the fire. Additionally, you never know what the barbeques has been exposed to before you use it.

For our purposes the ideal solution was to purchase a small portable gas barbeque. We found a great little barbeque that served our purpose for about $20. It is a completely self contained, easily portable barbeque that latches shut securely. It is fueled by small green propane cylinders which can be found nearly anywhere(even at your local grocery store).

We gathered up all of the barbeque equipment we figured we would need(a wire brush with a scraper, a burger flipper, tongs, and barbeque forks). We also picked up paper plates, plastic flatware, cups and napkins. Of course we brought condiments and seasonings. Oh yeah, and we brought steaks, hot dogs, and hamburgers all on the same trip.

What could have been a typical sack lunch without the barbeque turned out to be a grand feast at the lake that day. It was great to barbeque like at home when we were so far away. The food turned out beautifully and we made it through all of the cooking on one propane cylinder. We ate terrific food (which was probably still fattening, but at least we knew how it was prepared) and had a wonderful time. We have also tried doing this with chicken which is a very healthy meal when cooked on the barbeque(and tasty too).

Since that day we have taken many road-trip barbeques to many locations where a barbeque would otherwise have been impossible. Something about preparing a good hot meal really enhances the experience. It is a lot of fun to get out and see new places and be completely in control of when we will enjoy our “homestyle food.”

This activity is a lot of fun and the possibilities for where you can do this are almost unlimited.  Grab a map and find a place or just load up the car and go explore. With a great meal ready to cook, there is something to look forward to and something your whole family will be sure to enjoy.
